HCAHPS

Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems

A standardized survey sent to a random sample of adult patients between 48 hours and six weeks after they leave the hospital. Every hospital asks identical questions in identical wording.

Why this matters to you

It is the only part of the data that comes from patients rather than claims. The published figure counts only patients who answered "always" — a deliberately high bar, so 70% is genuinely good rather than a failing grade. It measures communication and environment, not clinical outcomes, so read it alongside the mortality and safety measures rather than instead of them.

Important: hospiguide.org is an independent informational resource. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or Medicare. This site does not provide medical advice and should not be used to decide whether to seek or delay care — talk to a clinician about your situation. Quality measures come from CMS public datasets, released August 13, 2026, and reflect care delivered during earlier reporting periods, so they may not describe a hospital as it operates today.
